    • As a former public school teacher and former school board president, and as a mama and a grandmama, I know nothing is more important than education. But for many Texans, the cost of higher education is soaring out of reach and out of grasp of families who want to help their children make their dreams come true. Since 1985, the cost of college tuition and fees in Texas has shot up a staggering 450 percent.

    Thanks to the Texas Tomorrow Fund, it’s easy for Texans who take advantage of the prepaid tuition program to send their kids to college. Since 1990, families, friends, civic groups and businesses have enrolled almost 100,000 Texas children.

    From November 1 until May 25, 2001, you can call 1-800-445-GRAD (4723), or visit the Texas Tomorrow Fund Web site at <http://www.texastomorrowfund.org/> to enroll your kids, grandkids or any child in the fund. Parents of newborns don’t have to wait. They can sign up any time.

    You can put a little bit in the Texas Tomorrow Fund each month, or pay for a whole contract at one time. Prices start as low as $15 a month for a year of community college. It can be used at any public college or university in Texas or transferred to an out of state university if your kids want to go somewhere else. You also can adjust your account if your childrens’ needs or family budget changes.

    I am completely confident in the future of the Texas Tomorrow Fund. I recently enrolled my oldest granddaughter in the program and next year, I will sign up another granddaughter. With the Texas Tomorrow Fund, Mainstreet Texans don’t have to worry about Wall Street volatility. It makes saving for college easy, economical and totally safe. It is guaranteed by the full faith and credit of the State of Texas. The Texas Tomorrow Fund is a smart investment for the future that can bring us all peace of mind.
