The Texas Comptroller’s annual report of property taxes includes information on cities that levy a property tax. This appendix provides 2004 city property tax levy information for the 1,041 cities that reported to the Texas Comptroller’s Property Tax Division.
The appendix groups the cities according to the appraisal districts in which they are located and lists the districts in alphabetical order. To assist the reader in locating a particular city, an alphabetical index begins on page D-25. A few cities are listed more than once because their property value is apportioned among multiple appraisal districts.
A number in the column labeled “% Homestead Exemption” indicates the city granted a local option percentage homestead exemption; the number is the percentage amount granted. In 2004, 181 cities granted local option percentage homestead exemptions ranging from 1 to 20 percent, the maximum allowed by law.
The column labeled “Taxable Value” shows the amount of property value each city actually taxed in 2004. Taxable value reflects deductions for property value not taxable because of applicable homestead exemptions, productivity appraisal of qualified agricultural and timberland, tax abatements, reinvestment zones and other exemptions.
The last two columns show each city’s 2004 tax rate and amount of 2004 tax levy.
Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn sincerely appreciates the assistance of city officials and chief appraisers for reporting this information.
