Comptroller Susan Combs’ Statement on President Obama’s Climate Change Speech

(AUSTIN) — "Once again, President Obama has shown a lack of leadership and vision in his speech today which directs the Environmental Protection Agency to reduce carbon emissions by putting limits on utility plants. Without offering up one single detail on what the new emission standards will be, the president is wrongly wielding his executive branch powers in a way that could wind up gutting the coal industry, which generates more than $6.2 billion in the Texas economy each year and supports more than 23,000 jobs. Most of the counties in Texas where coal is mined are rural, and often coal is the top asset driving their local economies. With this wrong-headed approach, the president is, in effect, waging war against the smaller communities who’ve depended on Texas coal plants for decades."
