Dean Ferguson of the Texas Comptroller's Revenue Estimating Division explains why sales tax is important to state and local government.
The sales tax provides much of the funding for the state’s general purpose spending. In addition to that, the sales tax is important to many local governments – cities, counties, special purpose districts. And so they rely on that revenue source that they receive in allocations from the Comptroller’s office as well. Now we have seen, thankfully, 16 consecutive months of year over year gains in the sales tax here in Texas and that’s up to the most recent month. July just ended last week so we’re seeing very strong growth in that revenue source. It was 10.3 percent last month, which is a very very robust rate. So we’re expecting that, we’re hoping that will continue.
