January 2001 Update

These rankings were originally presented in July 1998 as part of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts' comprehensive study Bordering the Future: Challenge and Opportunity in the Texas Border. The Border - defined as the 43 counties south of Interstate 10 and west of Interstate 37 - is compared to the 211 non-border Texas counties as a group and to the 49 other states. The most recent available data for each statistic has been used to provide an updated comparison. Some data is only available from the decennial census and updates for those statistics will not be available until the 2000 Census detailed numbers are released.
